Volunteer's For Youth Scoop-Off: A Homemade Ice Cream Celebration
Chili ice cream? Ice cream with real bacon bits? Hundreds of people tasted these exotic ice cream flavors and more at Volunteers for Youth's Scoop-Off on April 17.
After much deliberation and many return trips by judges to taste a little more, Meredith Costa's Fair Trade was selected as the prize-winning entrant. Those who missed the Scoop-Off still have a chance to sample Meredith's winning entry. As the winning flavor, Fair Trade will be sold by Maple View Ice Cream throughout the month of June.
Thanks go to many different people and groups who helped make the Scoop-Off a big success. We are grateful to Maple View Farms for sponsoring Volunteers for Youth's first ever Scoop-Off. Balloons 'N Tunes provided balloons, the Ackland Art Museum brought creative kids' activities, and Chapel Hill Parks and Rec helped with the set up at Wallace Plaza. Music from Chris Heaney and friends lent a festive air to the entire afternoon. Chris Strickland, Eric Montross, and Lauren Hills volunteered their time (and taste buds) as judges. And special thanks to all of the entrants who labored to make exceptional ice cream for all of us to share!
If you missed out on the fun this year, keep an eye out for the second annual Volunteers for Youth Scoop-Off in the spring of 2011.

VFY in the Herald-Sun
Read these two articles about Volunteers For Youth's mentoring program. In spite of what one of the headlines implies, Volunteers for Youth is fully functioning. Our staff is busy running Community Service, Teen Court and mentoring programs and we are looking forward to starting a bigger and better mentoring program in January.

Another Successful Fundraiser
On Sept 21, 2009 around 100 golfers joined us at UNC Finley Golf Course for the 10th Annual Volunteers for Youth Golf Tournament Fundraiser. This was Hubert Davis' third year with the tournament and VFY is honored to be associated with him. Close to $20,000 was raised from sponsors and donors, and all of the money will go directly into programming for Orange County Youth. A special thanks goes to Hubert and Leslie Davis and to all of our supporters. Please click here to see pictures from the tournament.
Governor's One on One Program Cut
In August 2009 the NC State Legislature voted to eliminate the Governor's One-on-One Program from the state budget. Volunteers For Youth is still committed to mentoring in Orange County even with the loss of the state program, and we are actively looking for ways to adapt to this funding crisis. The existing volunteer matches will continue and we will hold a new training for volunteers in 2009. Please click here for more information.
VFY Youth Help With Carrboro Mural
Youth involved with the Community Service and Restitution Program helped local artist Emily Weinstein throughout May and June to help paint a new mural on the side of the Jade Palace Restaurant in Carrboro. The project was funded by a grant from Strowd Roses and was a fun community service opportunity for the youth to participate in. Click here for an article about the mural.
